Rooted in Christ

Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Matthew 13:5-6

Dear Friends in Christ,

In my quest for a tall fescue lawn, I’ve heard that one important element is applying treatments that strengthen the roots of the grass. In the winter, the grass is more dormant, but the roots can grow strong and deep so that the grass can better withstand the droughts and heat of summer, reaching the water below the surface. We know that the heat and drought will come. Will we be ready for it?

In the Christian life, it is easy to invest little in time and energy in your relationship with God. Maybe you’ve heard the stories already and other things jockey for your attention. But when the spiritual heat comes and the spiritual droughts test your resilience, will your faith have roots strong enough to last? Will your experience of God be strong enough and close enough to remember God’s grace when times are tough? How strong are your roots?

What would it look like for you to grow roots deeper in Christ? Time with God in prayer is crucial. Listening for God in studying the Bible and in the worship of the church is essential. Sooner or later, if you want strong roots, you will also have to decide with purpose to say “no” to those things that pull you away from God and say “yes” to those things that nurture your relationship with God (including saying “yes” to caring for others and growing closer to them). Knowing which gets “yes” and which gets “no” requires wisdom that also comes from time with God, and study of God’s word, and fellowship with God’s people.

How deep are your roots? Come join us in our mission. We all can grow deeper roots in Christ.

Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13:8

Yours in Christ,

-Tom
