Epiphany and Light

“Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” Matthew 2:2

Dear Friends in Christ,

How wonderful to see the sunshine today! The sun is lighting up the colors in even the leafless winter trees. What had faded into grey now stands out—like the red berries on our holly tree. The light reveals things that we could have seen, but didn’t.

Today is the feast day of the Epiphany of our Lord, a feast day that begins the season of Epiphany, where we celebrate the manifestation of Jesus to the world. We will celebrate the feast day of Epiphany tomorrow (Saturday) at the 5:30 service, including hymns and a children’s dramatic presentation of the wise men from the east, bringing gifts to the child Jesus. This visit was a sign of the manifestation of Jesus to the Gentiles, bringing his light to the whole world.

Jesus is the light of the world, and through him, we see more clearly God’s power and presence in our lives. What epiphanies of insight has God given you? Have you sought God’s wisdom or looked for God’s presence? Pray that God would reveal himself to you this year, and rejoice when his light shines in!

Yours in Christ,

-Tom
